Working With Youth

Employers can help connect students to the world of work by increasing their career awareness and providing various kinds of work experiences. By working together, employers and schools can ensure that students develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary for future success.

Here are some of the opportunities you may be interested in participating in:

FuturePaths Learning Opportunities

SHORT-TERM ACTIVITY DURATION EMPLOYER INVOLVEMENT
Lead time for short and medium term activities is about a month; activities run throughout the school year
Career talks/classroom visits One hour to one day • Visit classroom, talk about career.
Career fairs/career days One hour to one day • Visit school, talk about career.
Workplace tours One hour to one day • Provide workplace tour to students.
Job shadowing Half to one day • Pair student, who does not yet have the skills for hands-on experience, with employee or co-op student to observe the workplace.
MEDIUM-TERM ACTIVITY DURATION EMPLOYER INVOLVEMENT
Lead time for short and medium term activities is about a month; activities run throughout the school year
Career/Work Education Placement One to four weeks • Provide student with short-term work placement for hands-on experience as part of high school credit course.
• Help prepare a learning plan and evaluate student's progress.
Mentoring Time varies • Advise student and act as role model.
Project-based learning Time varies • Serve as mentor and collaborate with student on projects aimed at providing solutions to real workplace problems.
LONG-TERM ACTIVITY DURATION EMPLOYER INVOLVEMENT
Lead time for long term activities is a few months for coordination and selection
Summer Youth Internship Program 6 week program starting at the beginning of summer aimed at students completing grade 11 or completing grade 12. • Provide student with an paid placement.
• Work with a job coach on working with the student during the internship to develop skills and evaluate student’s progress.
• If applicable, work with the Youth Apprenticeship model with students and job coach.
